U.S. bottled water off -limits in certain years

Many grocery stores in the United States have eliminated bottled water from their plastic range. A pioneer in this direction is Ashland Food Co-op the only retailer of certified organic products in the south of 'Oregon.

Founded in 1971 as a cooperative to buy the circuit has now over 7000 cooperatives with an extensive selection of organic products from meat to fish, meats, baked goods, beer, wine and cosmetics.

In September 2009, Ashland Food Co-op has removed the plastic water bottles from the shelves. The fact in itself is not a surprise, given the characteristics of the retailer, but the interesting thing is how they got there.

Ashland has in fact received the first requests from customers asking them how they reconcile sustainability perseguita dalla mission aziendale con la vendita dell'acqua in bottiglie di plastica tramite note imbucate nella cassetta dei suggerimenti presente nel punto vendita.

La cooperativa ha infatti messo in vendita bottiglie colorate in acciaio Reusable stainless steel for $ 12 that customers may fill for free water in the store.

Apart from the seasonal tourists unfamiliar with the cooperative and were unprepared customers, according to the direction, reacted very well.

This is not the first environmental effort to Ashland in 2008 because all the plastic bags have been replaced with reusable bags at checkouts and at the same time, it was reduced by 75% the consumption of paper bags.

Other Co-op stores have followed suit and removed bottled water from their shelves with "Take Back the Tap". Even a local independent film festival that used to distribute water free bottle suspended the practice.

Throughout the country there have been other types of shops that have started similar initiatives but to date none of the big chains have followed suit. The next initiative

sustainable Ashland will cover the replacement of other reusable compostable disposable tableware in food industry. They are in fact in order to buy food, wash dishes and containers as well as a dishwasher.

spokeswoman Ashland, Annie Hoy, acknowledges that it is not easy for any store to take such decisions for them but have decided it deserves listening to customers and do not be afraid to try to change.
