The theme for 2010 is "Moving best to live well" (Travel smarter, live better). And 'now a matter of fact, move more intelligently helps to live better today and tomorrow. Improve our health, our body, our mood, quality of life in our city, our neighborhood, the environment in which we live. In addition, costs less to our portfolio and the community at large.
The massive growth in car traffic, especially in urban centers, has provoked a strong reaction of the people, noise, air pollution and congestion. The most vulnerable such as children and the elderly suffer the worst consequences. Traffic causes hundreds of thousands injured and tens of thousands of deaths in the European Union.
Indirectly, the traffic is responsible for respiratory and cardiovascular diseases and causes of stress. But there are still other aspects related to mobility, responsible for our well-being. Scientific studies have shown that regular exercise is essential for the health of body and mind. Yet, our society is becoming more sedentary and obesity is increasing in all European countries. The practice of sports and taking care of their physical, though growing, concern, unfortunately, a small percentage of the population. The poorer sections of society and the elderly, are generally excluded.
An increasing use of cars and an environment that promotes physical activity are the main causes of sedentary, less active lifestyles and obesity. Walking and cycling as transport modes, the integrated public transport as an alternative to private cars, may play an important role in the promotion of exercise, because they introduce regular physical activity in everyday life, easily and low cost. With the campaign
"Moving best to live well ", participating cities commit themselves to actively promote the mobility as a tool to combat excessive sedentary, overweight and obesity, and improve physical and mental wellbeing of citizens. In addition, the active mobility helps to improve the quality of life in cities, because it improves air quality, reduce noise, accidents, congestion and allows citizens to report some areas of the city to their original function - to walk, relax , meet new people, play - turning away from motorized traffic.
